Whilst the range and function of medical equipment is vast, there are a number of basic pieces of equipment that will be found in all healthcare and similar facilities, including the thermometer.  A thermometer is a piece of equipment that is used to take the temperature of a patient. Thermometers mostly have either coloured alcohol or mercury liquid inside them.  When heated, both liquids will expand, when cooled both will contract.  Due to the fact they are contained inside a glass tube which creates a vacuum,  the liquid will go either up or down the tube dependant on the heat created by the patient.  The glass tube has a scale on it to enable the liquid's level to be measured. Ear thermometers have a highly sensitive device inside them which is able to detect even the slightest changes in infra-red emissions.  The most common sensor inside an ear thermometer is a thermopile, which can measure up to 1/10th of a degree of change in infra-red emission.

Sterilizers and Auto claves

In any environment where hygiene and cleanliness of equipment is paramount, machines such as auto claves or sterilizers are essential pieces of equipment.  As well as healthcare facilities, these machines are used in Dentist's clinics, beauty salons and tattoo parlours amongst others.  Both types of machine provide an extremely high standard of sterlization of equipment, with an autoclave using steam and a sterilizer using other substances.
